A Note from Kirby Unti
It is an election year and the rhetoric is flying about health care related issues. It has only gone from bad to worse in this last decade and one has to wonder whether there is any truth behind the promises. The cynic in me tells me the rich will get richer and my out of pocket expenses will only increase.
Fortunately there still remains a critical component of health care that has not been completely destroyed by the system. I am talking about the care side of the formula. It is revealed in the attitude, heart, or bedside manner of the doctors and health professionals. Having been part of a family that has been in and out of a lot of doctors offices this past year, I am here to report that how one is cared for by the doctor and his or her entire staff makes all the difference in the world as to how one experiences the health care system.
Trust me when I tell you we have seen both sides of the spectrum. Our family had one doctor who was a great technician. We are grateful to him for his skill. He performed a very difficult procedure and did it with excellence. Unfortunately the experience was miserable for our family member because of his cold, calculated approach. Suffice it to say neither he nor the surgical team demonstrated much in the area of caring.
Fortunately on the other side of the spectrum, one of my daughters had foot surgery performed. She was quite frightened trying to imagine what it would be like to have someone cutting on an already very tender foot. Dr. Michael Mishalanie and his entire staff at Valley Foot and Ankle were wonderful. They expressed genuine care from the get go and went out of their way to explain each step of the procedure. My daughter experienced almost no pain. She was not only relieved, being able to overcome the fear, lifted her spirits up.
Let us not forget in the middle of all the political hype that the best medicine is still medicine that is given with heart. Thank you Dr. Mishalanie and your entire team.
